CRK works with city to stop sewage spill

Nearly 10,000 gallons of raw sewage entered Atlanta's Tanyard Creek last week when a private lift station at an apartment complex shut down, causing the waste to flow directly into the stream instead of into the city's sewer system. Power at the complex had been turned off because of bill non-payment.

The sewage contaminated the creek, which flows through the Collier Hills neighborhood, with extremely high bacteria levels (>120,000 MPN) and caused a large fish kill.

CRK investigated the spill through our Neighborhood Water Watch Program and brought it to the attention of the city's Department of Watershed Management (DWM). Personnel from DWM located the source and had the power restored. CRK water samples taken this week show that life is returning to Tanyard Creek and that bacteria levels have dropped to 600 MPN — 235 MPN is the standard for body contact/recreation. We will continue to monitor this situation.

Slots filling up fast for Saturday's paddle trip!

Don't miss your chance to join us for our next River Discovery Series paddle trip: Saturday, July 13, as we paddle nine miles from Jones Bridge to Island Ford. Beginning on one of the most scenic sections in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, this journey on the Chattahoochee will be an easy paddle with few riffles. River Otter and Osprey are occasionally spotted along this section, and Great Blue Heron and Red Tailed Hawks are common. (Check out the CRNRA map here.)

Register here for this trip; email Tammy Bates for more info at [email protected].

On a related Outings Program note: We are rescheduling our Headwaters Camp and Paddle Trip, for the weekend of Sept. 14-15, 2013. We're hoping the third time will be the charm, and (still) hope you'll join us!

Make it a 'BBQ Wednesday' to support CRK

Proceeds will benefit CRK.

The inaugural event will feature Memphis barbecue as the style of choice. The menu includes meats (dry-rub chicken, BBQ spice-rub ribs, pulled pork shoulder), sides (horseradish slaw, BBQ beans, jalapeno-cheddar corn bread) and combo plates ranging from $9.95 to $15.95.
