Outings Program offers fun hikes, camping and paddling into the fall

CRK’s Outings Program is in full swing! While we just concluded our popular River Discovery Series, we’ve still got plenty of trips available through the fall — including the debut of our staff-led Watershed Outings.

Next up: a hike on Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Headwaters region to the spring that gives birth to the mighty Chattahoochee River. Many don’t realize the river’s origin sits just a […]

Transparent negotiations are key in tri-state water conflict

Given the serious condition of Apalachicola Bay and the seafood industry, it is not surprising that Florida has threatened legal action over the tri-state water conflict. That said, we find it hard to believe that more litigation will resolve an issue that clearly must be settled at the conference table.

The Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) Stakeholder Group, which includes representatives from all three states, is using […]

As the weather starts to cool off, our Outings Program takes on an autumnal quality that will be evident in our next Watershed Outing: a hike on Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Headwaters region to the spring that gives birth to the mighty Chattahoochee River. Many don’t realize the river’s origin sits just a few hundred yards from the Appalachian Trail.

Join CRK Executive Director Sally Bethea on a 4.5-mile round-trip hike along a mountain ridge that offers spectacular views of two watersheds […]

Sewage spills continue to plague Atlanta’s Tanyard Creek

Working with our Neighborhood Water Watch Program, CRK recently discovered another sewage spill in Tanyard Creek. This came a month after a private lift station dumped nearly 10,000 gallons of raw sewage into Tanyard Creek and caused a large fish kill. (See RiverFLASH, July 9.) An enforcement action regarding that spill is currently being led by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
We brought this newest spill to the attention of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management, and they conducted a thorough investigation, locating several potential sources including private businesses. Bacteria levels downstream […]
